On Wednesday, Schechter marked three years since the tragic events of October 7, 2023. Our older students began the day by hearing from Orit Sarbagil of the IDF Widows & Orphans Organization. A parent of former Schechter students, Ori shared how the organization has grown since October 7. She also offered chesed opportunities to support families of fallen Israeli soldier that students could perform for for their b’nai mitzvah projects.
Later in the day, 8th graders led a meaningful commemoration, sharing their reflections and the artwork they created in memory of those who lost their lives that day.
Students also created “Steps of Commitment,” describing how they will honor those whose lives were lost by strengthening our community and carrying their light forward.
Our ShinShinim, Almog and Eden, provided deeply personal reflections about individuals they chose to honor. Almog shared the story of Libby Cohen-Meguri, a 22-year-old IDF officer whose family called her “Our Sunshine.” During her final phone call with her family, Libby spent her last moments repeating a simple but powerful message: “I love you.”
Reflecting on Libby’s life, Almog said, “In the hardest moment imaginable, her instinct was love.” Today, Libby’s family continues to carry her light forward by supporting children with special needs, helping soldiers, and rescuing animals.
Eden shared the story of Matan, Ilay, and Adir, three best friends from Eden’s hometown, Even Yehuda, who grew up together, surfed together, and attended the Nova Music Festival together. On October 7, as they sheltered with others from the attack, the three friends acted to protect those around them.
“They will always be remembered for the people they were and the mark they left on the world,” Eden said.
Through these personal stories, our students were reminded that behind every name is a life, a family, a community, and a story worthy of being remembered.
