Schechter Shining Moment, by Karen Benson, M.Ed., Schechter Grandparent
My husband, David, and I watched with joy as our granddaughter, Rayella, danced, sang, and read Torah with her classmates at the Tikkun ceremony on Thursday.
We couldn’t get over how well-prepared, proud, and engaged the children were. This was truly an experience of “Living Judaism” for the students, their parents, and family members.
It was also so meaningful to be back at Schechter after so many years, as our family has a long connection to Schechter. My dear father, Irving Robbin z”l, was one of the early founders. I taught 2nd and 4th grades from 1970-73 when the school was housed in the Hebrew School wing at NSS Beth El in Highland Park.
We were proud to send our daughters, Deborah and Reena, to Schechter, and now, visiting the current school facilities and meeting administrators and staff, I appreciate how the school has come into full maturity and excellence. It’s very impressive!
Life circles back, as my father’s efforts on behalf of future generations have benefited the larger community and now his great-grandchildren as well. The wonderful Schechter faculty and staff have made our two Israeli granddaughters most welcome as they spend the school year here, far from their evacuated Gaza border kibbutz. The warmth and care they’ve received have been a blessing from the Schechter community to our family and we’re grateful.
