Kindergarten Chagigat Hagan: A Heartwarming Celebration of Jewish Tradition and Learning

On Friday, February 21, 2025, Schechter’s Kindergarten students and their families gathered for an unforgettable Chagigat Hagan celebration. This special event offered families a chance to engage with their child’s learning in a hands-on, interactive way while celebrating the growth and development of our youngest learners. It was a morning full of learning, laughter, and heartfelt connections between the students, their families, and the school community.

A Joyous Start to the Day The day began with a warm and welcoming morning meeting, which set the tone for the celebration. From 8:20 AM to 8:45 AM, Kindergarten students gathered with their teachers, engaging in conversation, sharing experiences, and preparing for the activities that lay ahead. It was a beautiful moment for the children to come together, establishing a sense of community (Kehillah) as they discussed their day and expectations for the celebration. Following the morning meeting, the students participated in a Picture Frame project, which provided them the opportunity to express their creativity. The children personalized their own picture frames, allowing them to reflect on their growth and the importance of the day’s celebration. This hands-on activity also provided a perfect opportunity for parents to get involved, as many joined their children in decorating the frames, bonding with their kids over shared moments of learning and fun. T’fillah: A Community Prayer Experience At 9:10 AM, students traveled to the Beit Knesset (synagogue) for a communal t’fillah (prayer service). This was a special moment in which the children and their families came together to pray, reinforcing the connection between students and their Jewish heritage. As part of the t’fillah, the children participated in singing songs, reciting blessings, and engaging with the community. The service included blessings such as Shehechiyanu (the prayer that marks a special occasion), Modeh Ani (a morning prayer of gratitude), and Mah Tovu (a prayer of thankfulness), which helped students embrace the joy of Jewish tradition in a lively, meaningful way. The song “Sanctuary” was also sung, and the children were encouraged to sing along, making the experience not only spiritual but also interactive. Through these songs and prayers, students learned the value of gratitude, community, and connection with their faith. Celebrating Growth and Development In addition to the communal prayers, the Chagigat Hagan celebration allowed families to witness their child’s academic and personal growth. Through interactive experiences such as the poetry binders and the picture frame activity, parents were able to see firsthand how much their children have learned and how they have grown as individuals. One of the key aspects of this event was its focus on Achrayut (responsibility) and Masa (journey). As the children engaged with their projects and participated in the t’fillah, they began to understand the significance of their educational journey at Schechter and the responsibility they have in carrying forward their Jewish heritage. A Celebration of Togetherness One of the most heartwarming aspects of the day was the opportunity for students, families, and teachers to come together as a community. Parents expressed their gratitude and joy at being part of Schechter’s educational community. Erica and Jaime Faulhaber, parents of Lily (’33), shared their thoughts: “We are so impressed by the thoughtful programming and the joyful atmosphere, and we feel so grateful to be part of the Schechter community.” These words encapsulate the spirit of the event—where every participant, from students to parents, felt a deep sense of connection and belonging. The celebration also emphasized the importance of shared learning. By participating in the hands-on projects and experiencing the t’fillah together, families were able to bond over the shared joy of their child’s educational journey. It was a powerful reminder of the strength of the Schechter community, where the partnership between parents, children, and teachers creates an environment that fosters both academic and spiritual growth. Looking Ahead The Chagigat Hagan event was a perfect example of Schechter’s commitment to providing a holistic educational experience that emphasizes not just academic excellence but also community, spiritual connection, and responsibility. This event marked an important milestone in the Kindergarten students’ educational journey, setting the stage for the continued exploration of Jewish traditions and values throughout their time at Schechter. As we look ahead, the Schechter community will continue to offer meaningful opportunities for students and families to engage with Jewish traditions, learn from one another, and grow together in a warm and welcoming environment. The Chagigat Hagan celebration was just one of many events that highlight the strength of the Schechter community and the power of shared learning. We look forward to more celebrations and opportunities for our families to connect, learn, and grow together in the years to come.
