Our journey, which began in 1962 with a modest group of 27 students, has evolved into a vibrant community that seamlessly blends tradition with innovation, ensuring that our students receive a comprehensive and forward-thinking Jewish education.
Founding Vision
The vision for Solomon Schechter was born in the basement of the late Mel White, where a group of committed Jewish lay leaders from the Midwest Region of United Synagogue of America gathered. These pioneers believed that a Jewish day school like Solomon Schechter would play a crucial role in strengthening the future of Judaism. Their efforts culminated in the opening of our school at Beth Hillel in Wilmette, where we began with kindergarten and first grade. From the beginning, our founders, including notable figures like the late Lou Winer, Rabbi Stanley Schachter, Dr. Lifsa Schachter, Israel Ribner, and Dr. Alfred Soffer, envisioned a modern educational setting guided by Conservative Judaism. They aimed to create a place where general and Judaic learning, Western ideals, and Jewish values could intersect and enhance human character development.
Bridging Tradition and Modernity
One of the revolutionary ideas at Schechter was the integration of General and Jewish Studies, where boys and girls would study all subjects together. This concept was groundbreaking for the non-Orthodox community at the time, and it set the foundation for our school’s inclusive and comprehensive educational model. Dr. Charlotte Glass, Head of School Emeritus, recalls, “When I first became involved with Schechter, I didn’t know what a day school was, and neither did most of the people around me. It was a new concept that children would learn their General and Jewish Studies side-by-side, integrated.” Our curriculum has always been designed to nurture both the academic and spiritual growth of our students. By incorporating Jewish values and traditions into everyday learning, we instill a deep sense of identity and community in our students. This holistic approach not only prepares them for academic success but also equips them with the moral and ethical compass needed to navigate life’s challenges.

While rooted in tradition, Schechter is committed to innovation in education. We recognize that each student is a unique individual and developing learner, and we tailor our instruction to meet their diverse needs. Differentiated instruction is at the core of our learning model, with carefully designed schedules, leveled classes, and innovative teaching structures that provide extensive opportunities for both intervention and extension. Our comprehensive student support team includes mental health professionals, special education and ELL teachers, and coordinators for both Judaic Studies and Hebrew Language. This team works collaboratively to ensure that every student receives the support they need to thrive academically and personally.
Social-Emotional Learning and Community Building
At Schechter, social and emotional learning (SEL) is an integral part of our educational philosophy. Our research-based SEL curriculum, combined with Jewish values, empowers students to understand themselves and others, manage emotions, build empathy, and make responsible decisions. Positive relationships, clear expectations, and collaborative problem-solving are key components of our approach, positioning students for success in all areas of life. Community is at the heart of the Schechter experience. From the moment students step inside our doors, they are embraced by a nurturing and supportive environment. Daily morning meetings in their Kehillah (homeroom) and various grade-level cohort activities foster a strong sense of belonging. Our innovative school-wide Tribe program further connects students across grades, creating a sense of family and continuity throughout their years at Schechter.
