Sara Sherbill (’88) Returns to Schechter for an Evening of Inspiration and Healing

On Wednesday evening, more than 130 people gathered at Schechter to hear alumna Sara Sherbill (’88) engage in an inspiring conversation with Dr. Lena Kushnir, her classmate and friend, about her recently published memoir, There Was Night and There Was Morning: A Memoir of Trauma and Redemption. Sara dedicated the book to her best friend and Schechter classmate, Nicole Drexler, whose kind spirit and generosity made the event possible.

Lena spoke with Sara about her journey and the process of writing the book, delving into the profound impact of domestic abuse on families and the importance of breaking the silence surrounding such experiences. Their heartfelt discussion provided a powerful segue into Sara’s reflections on returning to Schechter after so many years.

“It was healing and meaningful to be back at Schechter,” Sara shared. “The warmth of the room was palpable, and it was a testament to the Schechter community. Seeing old friends, teachers, neighbors, and former congregants all together was such a gift.”

Lena echoed Sara’s sentiments. “It was a powerful and important event, and I am so grateful to Sara for her openness, honesty, and compassion in sharing her story,” Lena said. “It was also wonderful to welcome new faces and those returning to Schechter after some time away. Our doors are always open, and we hope that everyone could feel that sense of belonging.”

Joan Sohn reflected on the deep connections and nostalgia throughout the room. “It was heartwarming to see so many alumni and former teachers come out to support their classmate and former student,” she said. “The event showcased the strength of the bonds formed at Schechter. Judaism, friendship, loyalty, and so much more. There was a lot of hugging—people were genuinely happy to be together.”

“The event and the turnout was amazing,” added Holly Rosenberg. “Lena was an exceptional host, asking thoughtful questions, and Sara was an inspiration and a blessing.”

In addition to the emotional and intellectual richness of the discussion, the event delivered an important message of support for those affected by domestic abuse. Special thanks to the Joy of Life Foundation for sponsoring the evening and to Barbara Siegel, Clinical Director at SHALVA, for providing attendees with critical insights into partner abuse and SHALVA’s resources.
