Ensuring the Legacy Lives On: Schechter’s Commitment to the Czech Torah Webpage Project

At Schechter, we are proud to be the stewards of a historic Czech Torah scroll, a sacred survivor of the Shoah and a powerful symbol of Jewish resilience. This Torah carries with it the voices of a lost Jewish community, and we are honored to ensure its story continues to be told.

The Czech Torah Webpage Project

The Memorial Scrolls Trust (MST) has launched an important initiative to link over 1,000 Torah Scroll holders to its database, ensuring that the legacy of these scrolls remains visible, their locations known, and their stories never forgotten. As part of the Conditions of Loan, each Scroll Holder is encouraged to create a dedicated “Czech Torah” page on their website. This page serves as an educational resource, providing historical context about the Torah, sharing how it is integrated into the life of the community, and linking back to MST’s website to connect with the greater global network of Czech Torah holders.

At Schechter, we recognize the importance of this project not just as a fulfillment of our role as a scroll holder but as an extension of our core values of Torah, Avodah, and Gemilut Hasadim. Our Czech Torah is more than a ritual object—it is a living testament to Jewish perseverance, a tool for education, and an enduring link between past and present generations.

The History of the Czech Torahs

The Jews of Bohemia and Moravia lived in a vibrant, thriving community for over a thousand years. However, during the Nazi occupation, synagogues were destroyed, communities were shattered, and Jewish artifacts—including 1,800 Torah scrolls—were confiscated and sent to the Jewish Museum in Prague. These scrolls, meticulously cataloged by Jewish scholars who were later deported and murdered, were ultimately rescued and brought to London in 1964 through the efforts of the Westminster Synagogue and generous benefactors. Today, these Torahs serve as enduring reminders of those who perished, their memory safeguarded by the communities who house them.

Our Commitment at Schechter

By adding a dedicated Czech Torah page to our website, we reaffirm our commitment to preserving Jewish history and honoring the memory of those who came before us. This initiative will:

  • Educate our students, families, and visitors about the story of our Czech Torah.
  • Connect Schechter to a global network of Torah guardians who share in this sacred responsibility.
  • Ensure that the memory of the Jewish communities of Bohemia and Moravia endures.

Our Czech Torah is not just an artifact—it is an integral part of our Jewish identity, woven into the fabric of our community. Through its use in prayer, education, and remembrance, we pass on its legacy to future generations.

Join Us in This Meaningful Project

We invite our Schechter families to learn more about our Czech Torah and to explore the resources provided by the Memorial Scrolls Trust. To further engage with this initiative, we encourage students and families to visit the MST website, where they can delve deeper into the history of these scrolls and their incredible journey.
